Lentils

Lentil marketing formed the base for Centre State’s development as a key South Australian grain marketer. A privately owned family business since its beginnings nearly two decades ago, Centre State is a major operator in the lentil market and has an acute understanding not just of the market, but how to secure the best returns for growers.

The company is an acknowledged specialist in container markets and has a solid relationship with container packers and exporters. All containers are shipped from the Outer Harbour container wharf. South Australia’s lentil crop is predominantly shipped in containers with the occasional bulk vessel being loaded out of ports such as Port Adelaide or Wallaroo.

A large percentage of shipments goes to the Indian sub-continent, with much of the balance going to the Middle East.

Centre State buys red and green lentils, the latter being relatively new to production in South Australia, and works closely with growers to ensure the best returns and the best performance against the market competition from Canada, India and Turkey.

Purchases are made on forward or cash contracts in accordance with our terms and conditions , and keeping paperwork to the essential minimum is one of the ways in which we make Centre State easy to deal with.

A seasoned operator in the Pulse industry, Centre State Exports is an active supporter of the development of Pulse varieties and the advancement of the industry in general. We are members of Pulse Australia and Pulse South Australia and are regularly involved in grower forums and the development of Pulse standards and markets.

Testimonial from a long-term satisfied grower

John Tiller, Pinery

Lentils have become a significant part of our business and the guys at Centre State have helped us market our lentil crop for as long as we have grown them. The knowledge and contacts Centre State have in the lentil market provides options for South Australia lentil growers that are second to none.

Lentils

Lentils are thought to have originated in the Near East, where they became one of the first crops to be domesticated, and have formed part of the human diet since Neolithic times. With some quarter of their calorific value coming from protein content, lentils (and most other pulses and legumes) are third only to soybeans and hemp in their level of protein by weight. As such a rich protein source, lentils form an essential part of regular diet in many parts of the world, notably in the Indian subcontinent where vegetarian diets are common (and fresh meat expensive).
